Traditional braces are often used by our orthodontist, Dr. Steven Alexander to address bad bites, overcrowding, and other dental alignment issues. Braces require a series of routine adjustments designed to tighten them. In time this will effectively alter the position of your teeth in your gums.
Once your teeth have achieved their ideal alignment the orthodontist will remove your braces. At this point, the doctor will give you a retainer to make sure that your teeth remain in their proper places. A Hawley retainer is one of the more common dental appliances used for preserving the position of your upper teeth. This is a molded acrylic mouthpiece that conforms to the shape of your mouth and holds your teeth in place with durable wires. In some cases, the orthodontist may place a fixed retainer behind your teeth. This is more common for lower front teeth or if your braces were needed to correct a significant overcrowding issue. This type of retainer cannot be removed except by a orthodontist, so you will need to use a little extra focus when brushing and flossing and monitoring it for damage.
