Little did you know, your retainer keeps your teeth from relapsing out of position after you’ve completed orthodontic treatment. However, that’s only the case if you take good care of it. Therefore, it’s important to do all you can to keep your retainer in tip-top shape. To help you do so, Dr. Steven Alexander and our orthodontic team have some helpful instructions for you.

Step No. 1: Keep your retainer safe – Many people lose their appliances because they don’t keep them in a safe place. So, to help you properly store your retainer, we recommend putting it in the retainer case as soon as you take it out of your mouth. Now that it’s in its little box, keep the box in a safe place you’ll remember, like your backpack, purse, or drawer.

Step No. 2: Keep your retainer clean – It’s important to wash your retainer every day so the plaque and bacteria will stay at bay. To properly clean the appliance, you can soak it in denture cleaner, like Efferdent and Polident, for the recommended amount of time listed on the cleaner label. When doing so, make sure you soak it in warm water (never hot water) and you also rinse it off before putting it back over your teeth.
