If you have a plastic retainer that you’re not quite sure how to care for, then you have come to the right blog. Our orthodontist, Dr. Steven Alexander, has the information, tips, and instructions you need to keep your retainer in tip-top shape. Now remember: Caring for your retainer is important because it helps it care for your teeth and maintain the straight appearance you have worked so hard for.
Our orthodontist’s instructions include:
-Rinse your retainer with warm water each time you take it out of your mouth, like when you eat each meal. This can be helpful because it can wash away bacteria and plaque that form on the appliance throughout the day.
-Clean the retainer each time you brush your teeth. You can do so by scrubbing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive or antimicrobial toothpaste. This can clean the retainer without scratching it. When you’re done scrubbing, rinse it with cool water. Never rinse the appliance with hot water because it can melt the plastic.
-Keep your retainer in a safe place where it won’t be lost or damaged, like in the case provided or in your pocket, purse, or backpack.
